On November 18,1918, the independence of Latvia was declared. The same day the National Council elected Latvia’s first provisional government and the first prime minister of Latvia, Kārlis Ulmanis.

However, Latvia lost its independence on June 17, 1940, when World War II began and regained it in 1991.

This year, on Latvia’s independence Day at  9 p.m. Latvia time, all Latvians around the world will sing Latvia’s national anthem “Dievs Svēti Latviju” (God Bless Latvia).

Lāčplēsis Day

November 11th, 2009

Lāčplēsis DayLāčplēsis Day (Latvian: Lāčplēša Diena) – Latvian Freedom Fighters’ Remembrance Day, is celebrated on November 11. On this date, Latvians commemorate the victory over the Bermontians at the battle of Riga.

It is a very important day in the life of every Latvian citizen. On November 11, 1919, the Latvian Army fought and won a fierce battle against the Russian and German forces, which had taken up arms against the Republic of Latvia. This victory over the forces of Bermont-Avalov was significant in the birth of Latvia as an independent nation. The victory marked the conclusion of the Latvian War of Liberation (1918–1920). The day is celebrated with ceremonies and concerts throughout the city.

Lāčplēsis (literal translation”Bear-slayer”) is an epic poem by Andrejs Pumpurs, a Latvian poet, who wrote it between 1872-1887 based on local legends. Lāčplēsis is regarded as the Latvian national epic. The poem recounts the life of the legendary hero Lāčplēsis, chosen by the gods to become a hero of his people.
