November 18 – Latvia’s Independence Day
On November 18,1918, the independence of Latvia was declared. The same day the National Council elected Latvia’s first provisional government and the first prime minister of Latvia, Kārlis Ulmanis.
However, Latvia lost its independence on June 17, 1940, when World War II began and regained it in 1991.
This year, on Latvia’s independence Day at 9 p.m. Latvia time, all Latvians around the world will sing Latvia’s national anthem “Dievs Svēti Latviju” (God Bless Latvia).
